RIP To The Godfather of Swamp Pop Music Warren Storm…
One of the things that makes Louisiana what it is most is truly the people and the soul of the areas music. Many memories span through generations of hearing songs. One of these musicians was the Godfather of Swamp Pop Music Mr. Warren Storm. We have heard memories of musicians but when we have heard them being told about Mr. Storm they seemed to have a little laughter or something even more memorable that you knew it would be worthy of your ear.
I will leave many memories to each and every one of you but I will share one of my own. The last year Mr Storm played Festival Acadiens et Creole was around 2014-2015 opening night he played the drums and I was able to get him in his element behind the drum kit smiling and singing in a photo. The next day he was walking around the local food vendor tents and I asked him for his email address so I could send him a copy of the image. He looked at the person he was with smiled and said give me something to write with. So I handed him a pen he rips a piece of paper writes in it and smiles while folding it and hands it back to me. As he walks away he says I can’t wait to see it laughing as he walked away.
As he took 5 steps away I opened the paper to see a physical address to send an image copy to. He definitely left me speechless in that moment. As he walked away he turned around in his signature strut looked at me and smiled and I smiled back at him realizing that it was a genius move on his part. I still own the paper and smile every time it surfaces.
I was thankful this image made it in a Festival book that year as it was the last time I ever saw him at the drums. I was then asked to take some images of his 80th birthday party. The contents of the video below are edited to show a modernized approach as to who this man was in his element with his music attached showing some of the night filled with great friends and great memories. We are thankful to local business owner Obie Hulin for the invitation to be able to share it. RIP Mr Warren Storm you are a symbol of Louisiana tradition and always will be. Video by Kaptography
